Duncan Chisholm and Ivan
Drever Eden
Court, Inverness
DUNCAN Chisholm and Ivan Drever first played together
in the high-octane Celtic rock of Wolfstone, and their acoustic duo continued
after Drever left the band.
They succeeded in shrinking Eden Court’s
large main auditorium to folk-club proportions, creating an intimate atmosphere
with apparently effortless ease.
Chisholm’s superbly expressive,
virtuoso fiddling and Drever’s powerful chord accompaniments and imaginative
single-line picking on guitar have always been highly compatible, but a decade
of working together has brought a telepathic sense of communication to the gig.
Drever’s country-tinged songs I Am The Desert and Snowdrops In The Rain
brought variation to an already eclectic instrumental selection. They spiced up
the action further by introducing a handful of guests for cameo roles, including
fiddlers Bruce MacGregor and Charlie McKerron, singer Jim Hunter and, on piano,
Phil Cunningham.
The crowd were treated not just to great music, but to
some excellent repartee, and even a conjuring trick from
Cunningham.
