4th Feb 06 REVIEW
BEAULY
|
Phipps Hall where the gig was held is a lovely building over 100
years
old. A member of the Beauly arts trust came on stage and gave the usual
safetly lecture etc. then welcomed Ivan and Duncan on stage. When they came
on Duncan said George had forgotton to mention that the lifejackets were
under the seats if we needed them. He said it was good to be back in Beauly
and that Ivan was going to start with the Rose of St. Magnus.
Then Ivan sang
The Viking Bride and said that would be the last time we heard that version
as his son had just recorded a version of it and Duncan added and his
grandson. Next Duncan said he was going to play a Phil Cunningham tune that
he fell in love with the first time he heard it. It was Lady Ramsay and it
is a beautiful tune but I have to say I thought the guitar was a wee
bit loud to fully appreciate the tune. Ivan said they had a request
for the next tune and they never eally played requests unless they
were asked hhe also said this tune was on Duncan and Drevers Greatest
Hits Volume 12. The tune was leaving Stoer. A toe tapping set of reels
was next followed by Anada Pa Geal the lullaby written on the
bagpipes.
Ivan then said he had had a request from Duncan and was going to
sing Rolling Home and he taught everyone the chorus as he expected us
to sing. He said he had forgotton the words when he was singing it
the previous night in Lossiemouth so to be prepared in case it
happened again. Duncan told the joke about the priests and the rats which
you can read on the post about his gig in December with Iain
MacFarlane and Marc Clement. I think they played a set that had a
differentarrangement of The Piper and the Shrew in it then finished off
the first half with a really fast set which was brilliant. Will
write about the second half tomorrow.......
Ivan also sang Hard Road from The Orkney years 1 in the first half and
he
told the audience that both himself and Duncan had made an effort with thier
appearance and he was wearing Duncan's jacket and Duncan was wearing his
jeans. It made me womder if the journalist who slated them for the way they
were dressed a few years ago at Eden Court was in the hall. Duncan said there
would be a 15 minute interval which was enough time to go to the pub and Ivan
said he didn't know if there was a raffle tonight but that Duncan and him had
a bad reputation at Phipps Hall for either eating or drinking the raffle
prizes at the interval. He also said they had some brick a brack for sale.
This turned out to be some c.d's and some chunky pendant and earing sets
made by Ivan'swife Linda. I bought The Orkney Years 11 Waterfront the only 2
for sale I didn't have.
The second half started with Ivan playing The
Grey Funnel Line then he sang Song For Yesterday followed by Duncan playing
The Gentle Light That Wakes Me another Phil Cunningham tune. He said there
was a crowd of them somewhere and they had stayed up all night having a
miserable time and Phil wrote this tune and half an hour later they were in
the studio recording it. Then it was a very fast set. I'm sure they
are getting faster then Ivan sang I Will Be There which has
beautiful lyrics. Ivan then said he and Duncan always share really good
stories but unfortunately about 82% of them couldn't be repeated in public
and then told the story about the wee girl painting the picture of
God which you can also read in the Duncan,Iain and Marc review.
Duncan played the lovely Mangersta Beach set next then Ivan played El
Caballo Blanco which was written in a traffic jam during a heatwave with
their two Spanish agents in the car with them Carlos and ? Barral
who chainsmoked and they had though of naming the tune Lock Stock and
Two Smoking Barrals. Clueless was played and that got everyone's
feet tapping and all too soon the second half was over. Duncan and Ivan
came back on after they guy from the arts group and thanked everyone
and they played Bonnie At Morn and an absolutely amazing fast set as
an encore. It was a brilliant night and indeed they are getting better
and better. The interaction between them on stage is good to watch. Ian
I know you were there too so it would be good if you could add to it.
